How far should the third leg of a tripod/orchard ladder be from the steps?

The ideal distance varies by size of ladder, but in all cases the third leg should be placed so that the step treads are level, front to back and side to side. We offer a lanyard restraint as a recommended option to keep the third leg from getting too far from the steps.
